Overview

It takes a team to get the job done, so it makes sense that more than one person can share in the credit. With commission splitting, FieldPulse can automatically divide commission on an estimate or invoice among everyone with a hand in it, instead of crediting just whoever happens to create the record. Commission can now route automatically based on roles, not just one fixed person. Assign it to Related Work Order Assignees — everyone assigned to the job, whether that’s a lead tech, a helper, or anyone else on the crew — and FieldPulse splits it evenly among them. Or assign it to the Related Customer Assignee, the team member tied to that customer’s account, often the original sales representative or the person who handles billing or scheduling for them. Either way, if the team changes, the split updates automatically, unless you’ve manually adjusted it. For example, a plumbing company that dispatches a two-person crew to every large install used to split commission manually in a spreadsheet after every invoice. With commission splitting, both techs are automatically added as Job Assignees, and commission divides evenly between them the moment the invoice is created. The result: less time on commission math, fewer errors, and a commission structure that actually reflects how your team works together.

Prerequisites

  • Enable Commission Calculations must be turned on in Company Settings > Commissions > General. See Invoice-Level Commission for the full setup.
  • You need Admin or Team Manager permissions to view or edit commission settings.
  • If you want commission to route automatically to a role like Job Assignees or Customer Assignee, make sure your jobs and customers actually have assignees set. Without one, FieldPulse can’t calculate who gets paid.
  • Optional: build Commission Templates ahead of time if you want to reuse the same split logic across multiple estimates or invoices.

Setting Your Default Commission Recipient(s)

By default, FieldPulse still assigns commission to whoever creates the estimate or invoice, so nothing changes unless you want it to. To change this, go to Company Settings > Commissions > General and use the new Default Commission Recipient(s) dropdown. You have three options:
  • Record Author: the person who created the estimate or invoice. This is the default.
  • Related Work Order Assignees: everyone assigned to the related job. If more than one person is assigned, FieldPulse splits your company’s default commission equally among them.
  • Related Customer Assignee: the Admin or Team Manager assigned to the Customer record, meaning whoever is assigned to the specific customer your estimate or invoice is for. That person gets the commission.
Because a job can have multiple assignees, FieldPulse always uses your company default commission rate and splits it evenly when you choose Related Work Order Assignees. Individual user commission rates are ignored in this case so the math stays consistent. You’ll see a confirmation prompt when you select this option to make sure it’s what you want.

If not, it falls back to your company default.

Viewing and Editing Commission on a Record

On any estimate or invoice, look for the Commission Recipient(s) field. If more than one person is receiving commission, you’ll see their names listed and separated by commas. If there are too many to display, FieldPulse shows a “+X” count; hover over it to see everyone’s full name. Here’s how to open and edit commission on a record:
  1. Click the gear icon next to Commission Recipient(s).
  2. Review each commission and its recipients in the Commission Configuration panel that opens.
  3. To add a recipient, click + Add Recipient, then choose By User to pick specific people, or By Role to assign by Job Assignees, Estimate Author, Invoice Author, or Customer Assignee.
  4. To add a brand new commission, click Add New Commission and either apply a template or fill in the details manually.
  5. To remove one person from a split, click the trash icon on their row.
  6. To delete an entire commission, click Delete in the top corner of that commission block.
Remember, only Admins and Team Managers with permission can see the gear icon and edit commission. Commission Recipient(s) field on an estimate listing three recipients with the gear icon beside it

Keeping the Math Right

Every commission split must add up to exactly 100%. FieldPulse won’t let you save otherwise. If you remove a recipient and it leaves commission unassigned, you’ll see a warning showing exactly how much is unaccounted for, and the Save button stays greyed out until it’s fixed. You’ll also see a warning if total commission is higher than the invoice’s margin. This doesn’t block you from saving, since some businesses intentionally run a job at a loss, but it’s worth double-checking before you move on.

When Commission Updates Automatically (and When It Doesn’t)

Here’s the rule to remember: FieldPulse keeps commission in sync with your record automatically, until someone edits it manually.
  • If the Record Author changes, commission moves with them.
  • If the Related Customer Assignee changes, the new assignee gets 100% of that commission going forward.
  • If Related Work Order Assignees changes (a tech is added or removed), FieldPulse recalculates the split automatically so it’s always divided evenly among everyone currently assigned. Only users with commission eligibility turned on in their permissions are included.
The moment you manually edit a commission — adding or removing a person, or adjusting a split — it locks. FieldPulse marks it “Manually Adjusted” and stops auto-updating it, even if the job or invoice changes later. This protects the commission you’ve deliberately customized from being changed without you knowing.

Commission Templates for Automation

Commission Templates now support the same role-based logic. Assign the Commission Recipient field by role — Job Assignees, Job & Site Visit Assignees, Estimate Author, Invoice Author, or Customer Assignee — so the same template works no matter who ends up on the job.
  1. Build or edit a template, then click the gear icon next to Commission Recipient.
  2. Choose a role (or a specific person, if you’d rather hardcode it).
  3. Apply the template from the Add Commission panel on an estimate, invoice, or their templates.
Templates built with roles instead of specific names stay useful as your team changes, so you won’t need to update them every time you hire or reassign someone.

Working with Existing Commissions

Nothing changes for commissions you’ve already set up. Existing single-recipient commissions show up in the new Commission Configuration panel as one commission block with that person allocated 100%. You can leave it as-is, or edit it to add more recipients and split it whenever you’re ready.

Cost Basis Reporting View

On any Estimate or Invoice record, visit the Cost Basis > Commission tab, where you can now toggle between two views:
  • Group by User: the current view, showing each person and their individual commissions.
  • Group by Commission: a new view that groups rows by the commission itself, with each recipient’s split percentage and dollar amount listed underneath.

On Mobile: Admin Experience

Commission splitting works the same way in the FieldPulse mobile app. Tap the gear icon next to Commission Recipient(s) on an estimate or invoice to add, edit, or remove recipients, just like on the web app.
One difference to note: the Cost Basis page, with the Group by User / Group by Commission toggle, is currently web-only. To review the full grouped commission table, use the FieldPulse web app.
